Description
When I am old, and comforted,
and done with this desire,
With Memory to share my bed
And Peace to share my fire.
I'll comb my hair in scalloped bands
Beneath my laundered cap,
And watch my cool and fragile hands
Lie light upon my lap.
And I will have a sprigged gown
With lace to kiss my throat,
I'll draw my curtain to the town,
And hum a purring note.
And I'll forget the way of tears,
And rock, and stir my tea.
But oh, I wish those blessed years
Were further than they be!
~ Afternoon, by Dorothy Parker

Another love affair has begun. These feathery, fragile textures have always entranced me. These strands of fibre - these threads of final existence - twirl and swirl in a delicate rhythm, playing with the soft breeze in the warm sunshine.
The hydrangea petals, once robust, velvety, and full of colour -- which I have also always loved -- have now faded to frames of delicate gossamer which are slowly dissolving to a powdery dust. In its earlier days, it held stubbornly to its foundation; its beauty was rich, solid, stable and unyielding. Now, in its final days, as its existence has become extremely frail, it releases itself.
Unencumbered, it is free to dance with the wind; unencumbered, there are no shadows even if it turns and folds onto itself, for in its transparency, the Light shines through all its layers of existence, and its beauty is truly ethereal, at one with the angels.

Hydrangea arborescens
Genus: Hydrangeaceae
It has an unusual characteristic: its stem peels off in seven successive layers of thin, differently coloured bark. 'Seven Barks' is an old Cherokee diuretic and detoxifier, and used to ease muscle sprains and burns. It is also used as a tonic for bladder and kidney ailments.
It has history: fossils date back 65 million years! It likes shady places in the woods. If you find it blooming Blue, itis
in acidic soil; if it blooms Pink, it is in alkaline soil.

I, too, love the beautiuful clustering of flowers that offer an amazing burst of soft bluish-purple and other colors, that only a Hydrangea can offer, Connie! This is so delicate and a stunning capture, but what I like equally as well, is your poignant, touching! and sensitive story about appreciating them even after their luster has passed in your description...so beautiful! Love it! Fave! L/F/FB/P!
