Description
Grand Hotel - Mackinaw Island
The beautiful and historic Grand Hotel sits on a hill on Mackinaw Island on Lake Huron overlooking the Straits Of Mackinaw in Northern Michigan.
The hotel was built in the later part of the 19th century and markets itself as having the worlds longest porch at 660 ft. in length.
The hotel has been visited by many Presidents and other famous celebrities and has a number of suites designed and named after former First Ladies. These include the Jaqueline Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and Laura Bush. I grew up working on the island part time and I was always excited to see the Hotel from the fairy on my way over to the Island.
The island itself does not allow motor vehicles anywhere. Although they do have emergency vehicles, those must be accompanied by horses when in use.
For those of you are old enough might remember seeing this hotel as a backdrop in the movie "A Place In Time" starring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour.
