Description
Exfoliation. Granite rocks in a forest showing signs of onion skin weathering or exfoliation. The granite is shedding its outer layers. Water containing dissolved salts is taken up by the rocks' outer layers. When it evaporates the salts crystallise, pushing the outer layers of rock away and giving it this flaky, peeling appearance. Granite is a very hard igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of volcanic magma.
