Description
Granny On The Couch by Kathy K. McClellan
The apple is called a Granny Smith.
A variety of fruit I found.
The cushion on which the apple sits
Is textured, beige and brown.
But Granny's skin is smooth and green.
A contrast all around.
Granny Smith apples have an interesting history. They originated in in 1868, in Eastwood, New South Wales, Australia (now a Sydney suburb). It was named after it's discoverer Maria Ann Smith.
Some sources recommend Granny Smiths (among other apples) as a particularly efficient source of antioxidants, particularly the flavonoids cyanidin and epicatechin, especially if eaten with the skin intact. Granny Smiths are also naturally low in calories and high in dietary fiber and potassium, making them commonly recommended as a component of healthy and weight-loss diets.
According to the US Apple Association website, it is one of the fifteen most popular apple cultivars in the United States.
