Description
"Granny's Nightcaps" is an original fine art floral photograph by Sandra Huston.
I could not pass up capturing this purple columbine trio in my Lisbon Falls, Maine garden with the early morning dew glistening on its petals with the deep green foliage as a backdrop.
Honored to be featured in the following Fine Art America and Pixels.com groups:
* Women Photographers on 4/25/19
Fun Facts: Scientific name: Aquilegia (the same family as the buttercup).
Other Common Names: Rocky Mountain Columbine, European Columbine or Granny's Nightcap. Columbines, native to temperate climates in Asia, Europe and N. America, are perennial flowers that are found in the meadows and woodlands. Columbines also make popular garden flowers, available in many colors, including red, yellow, white, pink and purple. Some are even bi-colored. They are very fragrant and are a favorite for bird watchers as they attract hordes of hummingbirds. Columbines are bell-shaped and have distinctive spurred petals and many say the flowers resemble jester's caps. There are over 60 different species, even more if you count hybrids and bloom in late spring to early summer. Columbines are one of those flowers that can cross pollinate easily so this hardy little plant is a plus in any perennial garden.
