Description
Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company Operations
The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company (MDDE) is a shortline railroad operating 120 miles of rail lines on the Delmarva Peninsula. MDDE operates three lines totalling 94 miles under contract with the State of Maryland: the Centreville, Chestertown and Seaford Lines. MDDE also owns and operates their 26-mile Snow Hill Line. All MDDE operations are conducted under restricted speed rules.
Motive power on MDDE is EMD RS3Ms 1201, 1202, 1203; EMD CF7 2628; EMD SW900 801. Operations are conducted on radio frequency 160.695 mhz (AAR 39).
Train Information
Centreville Line operations are based out of Massey, Md, where MDDE train crews are on duty as required, typically between 0600 and 0700. The line itself begins at the NS interchange in Townsend, De, and continues southward 31 miles through the stations of Golts, Massey, Millington, Sudlersville, Barclay, Roberts, Price and Carville. The majority of MDDE operations on the Centreville Line occur between Townsend and Massey, as the connection to the Chestertown Line is at Massey and all traffic operating on the Chestertown Line must use the Centreville Line to access NS interchange, thus increasing the corridor's usage. Customers on the Centreville Line include Wenger Feeds in Massey, Harbor Sales in Sudlersville, Perdue in Roberts, as well as CPS, Southern States and Tidewater Direct at Carville. MDDE has runaround tracks at Massey, Sudlersville, Roberts and Carville to help facilitate operations. Of note, Millington Hill, which lasts for a mile of 1% grade in its namesake town, is the steepest and longest mainline grade on Delmarva.
