A great blue heron (Ardea herodias) takes flight over a marsh near San Francisco Bay at sunset.

It is the largest heron in North America, with a height of up to 54 inches (138 cm) and a wingspan of up to 79 inches (201 cm). Its habitat ranges from Alaska, Canada and the Pacific coast east to Florida and south to Mexico and South America.

During the waning last moments of sunset, standing on the shoreline, it was getting cold and dark and as I was about ready to leave, I felt a Holy Spirit "nudge" in my heart:: "Stay a little longer". A few minutes later, this magnificent great blue heron took flight and flew right past me, and I am deeply grateful to God to have the opportunity to take this photo, which has been enhanced to have a painterly quality.
