Title: Snowy Egret Walking On Water
The FAA logo Watermark will not appear on final purchased photograph.
I made a mistake in the headline title calling the the Snowy Egret a Great Egret, which was incorrect.
I went to Malibu Beach Lagoon Estuary in California to take some shots of the many migratory birds that use the lagoon throughout the year. The estuary is one of my favorites places to capture great shots of the many species of birds that come to the lagoon. This shot was a hand held shot as I was wading in to the water of the lagoon. The Egret grows these special feathers during breeding season.
FYI: Like all egrets, it is a member of the heron family, Ardeidae. Traditionally classified with the storks in the Ciconiiformes, the Ardeidae are closer relatives of pelicans and belong in the Pelecaniformes instead. The Great Egret, unlike the typical egrets, does not belong to the genus Egretta but together with the great herons is today placed in Ardea. In the past, however, it was sometimes placed in Egretta or separated in a monotypic genus Casmerodius.
Taken with Canon Mark II with a Canon 70-300 lens.

FYI: Malibu Lagoon State Beach is a state protected beach of California, United States, and a unit of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Also known as Surfrider Beach, it has a long-standing reputation as a premier surfing beach. Located in Malibu, California, it was dedicated as the first World Surfing Reserve on October 9, 2010. The 110-acre site was established as a California state park in 1951.

Such a terrific shot! I've never seen an egret this shaggy looking. It seems they get to look like this and grow these special feathers during breeding season - had to look it up - and from the other photos I've found, this one is a the top of his game. Just stunning against the background - a really nice capture! v/f
