The Great Horned owl is not only one of the largest of owls, but it is also the most widespread of American owls. It is comfortable in deserts as well as forests as far north as Alaska and as far south as Arentina. This owl is pictured perched in a birch tree doing its thing: listening and staring in the hope of locating a meal.

I do not recall the time I first became aware of the world about me as it seems as though I’ve always had an interest in science and the natural world. But I do remember two very early experiences I had: One was examining my uncle’s photoflood setup to figure out how it worked while he was trying to photograph my brothers and I. It was my uncle who ultimately stirred my interest in photography. My second experience was catching cabbage butterflies and grasshoppers while playing in a neighbor’s large, jungle-like back yard. Mountains, fields, oceans, lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, insects and little “beasties” (what Leeuwenhoek called micro-organisms as he peered through his primitive microscope), stars, planets and comets had...
