Using as a wallet
This is a painting of my German Shepherd, Greta, produced from a photograph taken several weeks after she underwent brain stem surgery to remove a tumor.
I began painting in 1978 while on an archaeological project in the gold country of California. As I traveled through California and the Pacific over the next 20 years from one archaeological project to another, I never failed to carry with me watercolor and when possible oil paint. My studio has always been the outdoors. During the mid-1990s I tutored under Jack Rowe who had studied portraiture in New York before the Second World War under Weyman Adams. Painting directly from the blockhead (a generic sculpture amplifying planes of the face and facial features) I learned the fundamentals of cranial structure and the way light and shadow patterns convey that structure to the artist and viewer. In 2010 I met a very special individual...
