Large Haleakala Silversword or 'ahinahina (in Hawaiian) at sunrise on Mt.Haleakala,in Haleakala National Park,in full bloom at the summit parking lot. One of Hawaii's two state flowers,they only bloom once in their life and then they die. There is a small window of about four days in which they are in full bloom before they start to die.This rare photo was taken during that time. The Haleakala sub-species of Silversword is found nowhere else in the world except above 6,500ft. on the slopes of Haleakala. They live anywhere from 3yrs. to over a 100 years. before they bloom. The species is still on the Federal threatened species list.

If you stand downwind you can catch an usual scent I've never smelled before. Very sweet and pungent. And not at all unpleasant. Very few are aware of this fact actually :) Thanks for your interest.
