This is Halema'uma'u crater, the home of Hawaii's fire goddess, Madam Pele. Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kilauea volcano is the most active volcano on the planet. The crater itself is surrounded by rainforest; the contrast is remarkable! I hike here 29 days a month. I ride my bike through the village, hike through the rainforest and down into the crater. Though I have done it for years, I never tire of it. It is always different...sometimes raining, sometimes shrouded in mist, sometimes scorching hot. This photo was taken during a full moon, just before sunset.

I am a multi-media artist who lives in the rain forest on the slope of Kilauea volcano, on the Big Island of Hawaii. I live in a sleepy (yet cosmopolitan, due to the tourists from around the world) little village of artists, craft people, and scientists who are inspired in our work by our beautiful and unique environment. I am a teacher of Buddhism, and also an author--my books include "The New Insider's Guide to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park," "Bones of Love," "The Cry Room," "Oklahoma Dust, "Spiritual Not Religious," Chalice of Love," and "The New Insider's Guide to the Best Beaches of the Big Island Hawaii." I am an avid naturalist and hike and bike around Kilauea virtually every day. I love talking to the visitors who come here...
