This really strikes a chord with me - I do a fair amount of ecologically orientated art and this one really hits the mark. Fav on FAA and my SM here - www.facebook.com/cyberpixman google.com/+NigelFollettCyberPix twitter.com/CyberPixMan

Congratulations, Nola, your sobering and thought-provoking digital collage has been featured by Philanthropic Artists For A Cause Who Donate FAA Proceeds Or Original Art group! Thank you for the many ways you support animal welfare - liked! Beautiful artwork defending a disappearing species!

Nola Lee Kelsey replied:

Wonderful Michelle. Thank you so much!

What a wonderful work of art, even if it did not have such a clear message. The background on our left is so marvelous! I can't really write more right now because of my health and age. The volume of absorbing art between you and you mother (students, too? Obviously, although, I spent a lot of time here today, hurrying more than I want to, I've hardly touched the surface. Today I received this picture from a distant acquaintance. Although is not "high art" (whatever that means), it is the masses that need to have their consciences opened, I believe. https://twitter.com/Motherwell05/status/492238042556420096/photo/1 I will see you again, Nola! Peace, etc., Bruce Combs

Nola Lee Kelsey replied:

Thanks Bruce. I just looked at the Twitter image and had to share it. I am so happy your enjoyed my work. I enjoyed your feedback. Being the daughter of Avonelle Kelsey and new to creating my own art can be a bit intimidating sometime, but animals truly inspire me along my own path.

Awesome artwork and love your conservation message, my heart cries for those beautiful creatures! I loved them and admired their strength and beauty since I was a child and used to feed them peanuts...they have always had a place in my heart. Thank you for sharing about their fight against cruelty and abuse L/F ~ Blessings and Peace :)

Nola Lee Kelsey replied:

Thank you Absinthe, Living here in Thailand and seeing the na´ve actions of tourists contributing to the cruelty and corruption here, when we have several great sanctuaries they could visit instead, is definitely and inspiration - that I wish would end.

Wonderful work! V

Nola Lee Kelsey replied:

Thanks Stephanie, the plight of the tourism elephants in Thailand truly inspire as much as the poaching around the world.

What a great piece!

Nola Lee Kelsey replied:

Thank you Jane!

Artist's Description

Despite being endangered elephant around the world are routinely killed by man. Greed kills many that are hunted for the value of their tusks alone, most notably on the African continent, but it is a global issue. In Asia, especially Thailand, wild mothers and other heard members are killed so their babies can be taken, even inside National Parks. The young elephants are then beaten and torture via a training method known in Thailand as the pajaan. This traditional method goes on unit the young pachyderm's will is broken, making them subservient enough to spend their lives of 60+ years in chains. Every tourist dollar spend on elephant rides and treks, at wildlife shows, on elephant paintings or to be photographed with/ feed a street begging elephant supports this cycle of killing and cruelty. True, responsible travel consumers say no to these activities and put the animal's lives first. If you must spend time hand on with elephants, options are available, such as true sanctuary visit...

Born a zoologist, I have recently, and quite surprisingly, evolved to become a conservation artist, most often striving to create public awareness on issues from wildlife protection to protecting our planet. My love of art is a gift that was passed to me by my mother, artist Avonelle Kelsey (1931-2009). Having returned to college in mid-life, I am currently a full-time student working on my Master of Fine Arts in Creativity, a program for creative...
