Description
A staple of many sideshows was the half man or woman. They were born with sacral agenesis, where only the upper body developed in utero. The most famous, Johnny Eck, had a storied career in movies, vaudeville and the sideshow. His twin brother had a perfectly normal body.
Jeanie Tomaini, a half-woman, spent a lifetime in the circus and was married happily to 7 foot tall Al Tomaini. They raised children and help found Gibsontown, Florida as a retirement venue for circus people.
Prince Randian was a halfman who also lacked arms. Billed as the Living Torso he could roll a cigarette and light it using only his lips! He also married and had 5 children.
Half women were dressed stylishly during their acts which included singing, musical instruments, poetic orations and personal stories. They tended to receive marriage proposals in every town they appeared in. Immensely popular, many did marry and produce lovely children.
This painting represents all the great entertainers with sacral agenesis who forged ahead in life, supporting themselves without need of anyone's pity. True champions!
