Description
Hawai'i has one native hawk, the Io. These mid-size raptors figure a large place in Hawaiian culture. They are one of the aumakuas - animals, fish or birds that are considered to be manifestations of ancestors. Your aumukua will watch over you and warn you of danger. Families have one or more aumakuas and protect these creatures at all costs. I watched this io strike a spotted dove mid-air, then go to a palm and wait to see if it was safe to claim its prize. Did not have a camera when I saw the strike, but went to get one. The io was still in the tree, deciding whether or not to claim his prey.

Thank you Alana. I am very fortunate to have these birds nesting in large trees around the property.
