Surely one of the most visited and photographed landmarks on the Oregon coast, Haystack Rock, is well deserving of its fame! I arrived in Cannon Beach one evening in late spring 2014, not knowing it was practically the eve of the 50th annual Sandcastle Contest! Naturally that made it difficult to find a place to stay, but after a few stops I found a place right on the beach with Haystack Rock right outside the window (well....right outside and a little to the left....). The beachfront location was perfect for a quick trip out at sunrise. The delicate and ethereal clouds and color were intoxicating. Haystack Rock is a 235-foot (72-meter) intertidal sea stack accessible from land at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs.
