Description
Henry Bence Jones (1813-1873), British physician. Bence Jones studied medicine from 1836, and also discovered an interest in chemistry. In 1841, he went to Germany to study with Liebig, the leading chemist of his time. He lived and worked in London at St George's Hospital and was a member of both the College of Physicians and the College of Chemistry. He published on many topics, especially chemical analysis of urine. He was the first to recognise the significance of a protein (now named the Bence Jones protein) in the urine of a myeloma patient (Thomas McBean). In 1870, Bence Jones published a comprehensive biography of the famous chemist and physicist Michael Faraday.
