It is a wonderful reminder that "Spring has Sprung," when we hear, in our Arizona Sonoran Desert garden of joy, the coo of the Mourning Dove (zenaida macroura). It may sound sad, but it signals the beginning of the mourning doves habits of nesting, claiming territory, raising their young. It always amazes me where a bird may decide to build a nest and mourning doves are no exception.
This Cane Cholla Cactus or Walking Stick Cholla, located in my very own desert garden of joy, is once again, being used by a mama dove. She has built her simple nest, and has laid two eggs. This cholla cactus is surrounded by creosote bushes, prickly pear cactus, and a yucca. So it is not easy capturing her moments. I have used my long lens, macro lens, and wide angle lens to capture her tenacious journey, not budging from her nest.
I have used gentle movements, and a soothing voice to coax her into letting me get close. Well, here she let me capture her sweet face, looking through the protective spiney arms of this cactus. Up close and personal, in "Her Protective Hideaway!" Using a shallow depth of field to focus in on her, yet revealing her stickery nesting spot. I hope you will follow her journey with me, as I share more captures.

Beautiful close up photograph of a Mourning Dove nesting in a cactus with great pose and eye contact, light and shadows, and composition, Janet! F/L
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Morris, for your wonderful comment about this piece. I love to take a shallow depth of field camera shot. Either having the foreground blurred or the background. Focusing in on the mourning, sitting on her eggs, is a favorite of mine. They are very skittish birds, yet this mama seemed to take to me, as I was able to follow her journey, even capturing her two babies. This is a cane cholla cactus, and had other desert vegetation around it. So, it truly was her protective hideaway.

Amazing 🤩
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you HB Lee. I will have to agree with you. It was an amazing spring, with such a cooperative mourning dove. She allowed me to capture her sweetness on the nest. Even with her babies.

this is an outstanding capture Janet! an instant favorite of mine of yours, particularly in your bird series. the focus is so dramatic and absolutely crisp. how well your efforts paid off. I loved the back story of this. so informative. you could really make a book about all of the critters and plants around here and include your descriptions and sell it. just lovely to look at and read. the dove's perch in the cactus looks very safe and well guarded by those needles. what great refuge that cholla is providing for her nest. Bravo!
Janet Marie replied:
Chance! You always have such lovely thoughts about my artwork to share. I have always liked the idea of doing a travel book, like in the film, Notting Hill, with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. He owned a Travel Book Shop. Deborah Andreas said the same thing to me. I used to tell Jerry that back in 2014-2015 about his photography, little did I know I would be posting my own. It is something I will have to look into. I have shot so many beautiful images of this particular mama dove, as she trusted me to do so. So thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts and enjoying this and my stories. It says a lot about your heART. Wonderful qualities to possess. I appreciate the Brava! Janet đź’•

This is the cutest picture! I love mourning doves! As I was viewing your wonderful capture, I was wondering what kind of lens you used. Of course, all the info my inquiring mind wants to know is in your descriptions! Thank you!....Love them! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Debby! You are just the best! I can’t thank you enough for visiting my gallery and sharing your ever so lovely and encouraging thoughts about my artwork. This was a sweet moment for me, as she was sitting on the nest with her face being seen through the Cholla Cactus limbs. I couldn’t resist trying for this shot, hoping to pull it off. Came out just as I wanted. I am always thrilled when it works. As it doesn’t always. The lens I believe I used was my kit lens that’s 18mm wide angle zooming in, to 55mm (I can attach a macro lens to it to get in really close). Sometimes I need to use my long lens if a critter won’t allow me to get in close. This mama dove eventually trusted me to get close. So I have had quite some photo shoots through her two different egg laying. It’s my pleasure to have shared this. So glad you love it and feel as you do. I truly appreciate that and for choosing this as one of your favorites too! 💕Janet

This is so lovely, it looks like you got her to pose for you, well taken. f/l
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much for visiting my gallery of desert birds. She was a special one, as she allowed me to photograph her throughout her journey of motherhood. The mourning doves are very skittish, and fly away the moment they see you. I started out with my long lens and eventually I gained her trust, then able to get in close with my macro and wide angle lenses. This one is a favorite, as it really shows her sweetness. I am so glad you like it and feel it's lovely and well taken. I truly appreciate that and for choosing this as one of your favorites too.

great find...beautiful! :)) L/F ♥
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Stephen for visiting my gallery and leaving such a lovely comment. I didn't have to far to go for this, as it is in my own desert garden of joy. While capturing some of my spring cactus blooms, I noticed in the Cholla surrounded by other desert vegetation. Last spring a mama dove built a nest there for the very first time. So I was pleasantly surprised, not only to see her, but for her to allow me to photograph her many times. I am delighted that you like it, and feel it's beautiful! I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. đź’•Janet
