Hewitt stopcock, 1893. This device was a component of early anaesthetic delivery systems. It allowed air or medical gases such as oxygen and nitrous oxide to be inhaled with anaesthetic vapours such as ether or chloroform from an anaesthetic inhaler. It was invented by an English surgeon, Frederick Hewitt (1857-1916).
