Description
Coal. High-grade, low-sulphur coal (anthracite). Coal is formed from fossilized plants from the Carboniferous era (about 300 million years ago). The fossils are converted by high temperature and pressure underground into an increasingly pure form of carbon. High-grade coal, or anthracite, contains 85-98% carbon. The coal seen here is also low in sulphur, which means burning it contributes little to acid rain.
