Artist's Description

The Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836 when the Mexican army, led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, attacked the mission being defended by "Texians" William B. Travis, James Bowie and about 100 others, some who traveled from around the U.S. to join in the Alamo's defense. Some 1500 Mexican soldiers attacked the mission in darkness on the morning of March 6, 1836, following a 13-day siege. This photograph shows the famous front wall of the mission in downtown San Antonio, Texas. With the deaths of all of the defenders, the mission is considered sacred ground.
