Description
Horse jump. High-speed photographic sequence of a silhouetted rider jumping a hurdle on a horse (Equus caballus). The sequence, made by the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904), is from an album of photographs taken in Palo Alto, California, USA, from 1872-79. The jump runs from left to right from top left. Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photography, using novel techniques to analyse animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was asked to see whether galloping horses sometimes have all of their feet off the ground. He proved they did.
