Description
Hillegom is a small village located in the bulb or flower district of The Netherlands. The famous Keukenhof tulip garden boasting 6 million bulb flowers is located within five minute drive or more typical, 10 minute bike ride to the adjacent, more well known village, Lisse. The architecture featured is typical Dutch, step or 'trap' gables and klok gable , the rounder one, (both located on right side of the composition). The main feature however is the village water source (left). The 'plein' or village square joins the shopping district with the picturesque church at the south end of the main street. The sidewalk features fish grate brickwork next to the cobblestone brick work centering the village showpiece pump. HIllegom was settled by one of the prominent Dutch families, Jan Six, whose former house now houses the mayor's and other municipal offices.

Dear Mrs. Hough, the wall in our living room is still covered with Delft-blue tiles. The house was originally built for a beer handler, not very rich (like an Amsterdam "koopman") but, for a villager, well-to-do. So Delft-blue tiles were used, no polychrome. Hillegom was destroyed by the Spanish troops during the 80-year-war (1568-1648). After that war, our house was one of the first "new" houses in Hillegom. It was built over the basement that was left from an old abbey that was destroyed during the war. Friendly regards, Hugo de Jong

Dhr. de Jong, uw bent gelukkig binnen zulke mooie, oude huis te wonen. Ik ben rozig benieuwd wat voor soort tegel , qua motif en kleuren staat nog bij uw thuis. Polychrome of minder kleurike? Ik hou van antiek in het algemene en specifiek ook de heel aparte, ouderwetse architecture van het Nederlandse cultuur vooral in Haarlem en Amsterdam. .Bedankt dat uw tijd besteed om aardige commentaar te doen. MVG, tbh

Nice drawing: I live there with my family, in that very old little house at the right, with the strangely curved front. It's from 1651, we still have the old tiles and such.
