Hippopotamus means "river horse", coming from Greek. The hippopotamus is an extremely large semi aquatic mammal with a round body, short legs, and a big, broad head. Hippos are a brownish gray color on top and a light pink underneath. The ears, nose, and eyes of the hippo are positioned on the top of its head so it can stay submerged while still able to see what is going on around it. Hippopotamuses spend most of the day in the water and secrete a pinkish red oily substance that acts as a sunscreen. They can remain submerged for about 15 minutes, and are very fast and graceful underwater. They can also run up to 30 miles an hour for short distances. Hippos are herbivores and will roam up to six miles to get food. They come out of the water at night to graze and eat as much as 100 lbs of vegetation . Hippopotamuses are found in East central and West Africa, where they live in the fresh water lakes and rivers of the grasslands.
They are social animals, living in pods or groups of usually about 15 - a dominant male or bull and females (cows) and calves. They are very territorial.
Hippos have been a source of fascination for mankind for centuries, and frequently appear in various art forms and stories.
