Holland Tulip Festival I is a collage and acrylic painting offered by fine artist Shadia Derbyshire.

This collaged painting celebrates the delightful and colorful tulip blooms during the Holland Tulip Festival each spring in May. My mom traveled to Holland this past spring and shared some beautiful photos which inspired these latest pieces. The painting began as a soft under painting in acrylic, over which i layered various papers to create more refined shapes and patterns. I collaged the piece with hand torn, and painted, stamped, stenciled or otherwise embellished papers. Finally, I added beautiful foiled accents to really make the artwork pop and catch the light. This piece is on gallery wrapped canvas with a finish edge that reveals the art work process. it is coated to protect the papers and colors from the effects of UV light.

My most recent work draws more inspiration from color and texture than distinct subject matters, and my objective remains to imbue my canvasses with a sense of emotion. Through the intricate texture and vibrant color in my pieces, I aim to create a visceral response in the viewer; my hope is that the viewer may connect with them emotionally rather than through conscious, deliberate effort. In this way, viewers create their own interpretations through this initial connection, and the narrative of the piece becomes secondary. I was born and raised in Southeastern Michigan.
