Artist's Description

To make blue-light emitting semiconductors, scientists must be able to precisely control their atomic structure. This hollow-anode nitrogen plasma source is used to reduce atomic defects and create maximum luminescence. This device is used to reduce atomic defects in LEDs made of the semiconductor gallium nitride. It creates a nitrogen ion beam which can produce precisely-structured thin films. LEDS are made of two thin film layers that contain specific impurities which give them opposite electrical properties. An electric current passing through the LED will make it produce light.
