Description
Houdini escape stunt, 1912. Hungarian-born US stunt performer Harry Houdini (1874-1926) performing his overboard box escape on 7 July 1912. He is stepping into a crate that will be lowered into New York Harbor as part of the escape stunt. This was the first time he had performed this stunt. Houdini hired a tugboat with news reporters invited on board. He was handcuffed and shackled in leg-irons, then placed in the crate which was nailed shut, roped, and weighed down with lead. The crate was lowered into the water, but Houdini escaped in just 57 seconds. Photographed by Carl Dietz.
