Description
This is a digitally enhanced version of a raw capture of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from a Space Shuttle.
I have modified the original raw NASA image considerably to enhance the colors, beauty, balance and luminosity, in order to provide you a breathtaking, high quality, fine art print through this website. The original NASA raw capture is in public domain.
The HST was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990. It remains in operation today and could last until 2020. With a 2.4-meter (7.9 ft) mirror, Hubble's four main instruments observe light at near ultraviolet, visible and near infrared wavelengths. It is named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble. Notice the telescope's open aperture door for looking into the Cosmos.
By orbiting outside Earth's atmosphere, the HST avoids distortion due to the atmosphere. This also allows it to take extremely high-resolution images with almost no background light. Hubble's Deep Field mode has recorded some of the most detailed images ever, allowing a deep view into space and time. Many Hubble observations have led to breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe.
Hubble is the only telescope designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. After launch by the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, four subsequent Space Shuttle missions repaired, upgraded, and replaced systems on the telescope. Hubble was built by NASA, with contribution from the European Space Agency (ESA), and is operated by the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Hubble's successor, James Webb Space Telescope, is due to be launched in 2018.
