Hungry Baby Woodpecker being fed by papa by the nest cavity of this Florida palm tree trunk. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the reddish orange on the belly is hardly in evidence in this pose.
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple took turns incubating the eggs as a team for 2 weeks and one survived!
