Description
Hurricane Maria. Thermal satellite image of Hurricane Maria over Puerto Rico on 20th September 2017. Higher, and therefore colder, clouds are white, while lower, and therefore warmer, clouds are purple. Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico as a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour. It brought a deluge of rain and storm surges that caused widespread flooding. The storm caused extensive damage and knocked out power to the entire island. Image obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite.
