A pair of Eastern Bluebirds looking at each other perched on the branch of a dead tree.
The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a small thrush with a big, rounded head, large eye, plump body, and alert posture. The wings are long, but the tail and legs are fairly short. The bill is short and straight. Male Eastern Bluebirds are vivid, deep blue above and rusty or brick-red on the throat and breast. Blue in birds always depends on the light, and males often look plain gray-brown from a distance. Females are grayish above with bluish wings and tail, and a subdued orange-brown breast. Bluebirds perch erect on wires, posts, and low branches in open country, scanning the ground for prey. They feed by dropping to the ground onto insects or, in fall and winter, by perching on fruiting trees to gulp down berries. Bluebirds commonly use nest boxes as well as old woodpecker holes. The female bluebird may lay 3 to 8 pale blue eggs at one time and then incubates them alone. During this time, the male bluebird takes responsibility for gathering food. The eggs hatch after 2 weeks, and the nestlings will open their eyes within 4 to 6 days. The chicks are ready to leave the nest within 18-20 days of hatching, but if this was an early brood one bird may stay back with its parents to help with the next brood. Bluebirds can produce between two and four broods during the spring and summer. Bluebird flocks migrate to the southeastern United States and Mexico during winter. These birds have a lifespan of 6 to 10 years in the wild.
