Description
This photograph depicts a tricolored heron in a Floridian forest environment at St. Augustine's Alligator Farm rookery where hundreds of birds come to mate and bring up their young during Spring months. Wading birds like herons, wood-storks and egrets enjoy the natural habitat this area provides and it is a photographer's paradise. The tricolored heron. also known as the Louisiana heron, can be found in marshes, swamps, bayous, mudflats, lagoons and coastal ponds. The female lays three to four eggs on a nest of sticks placed on a bed of reeds or in a tree. " Both the male and female build the nest and incubate the eggs. The chicks hatch in about three weeks. Both parents care for the chicks and feed them regurgitated food." http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/tricoloredheron.htm
