This wonderfully beautiful red bird is the Hawaiian 'I'iwi. One of the birds that eats primarily nectar from varieties of native Hawaiian plants. The names of nearly all native Hawaiian birds are derived from part of their bird song. In this case, the 'I'iwi has a part of their song that is 'ee'ee'vee'. 'I'iwi are constantly moving and often hang up-side down retrieving nectar, sometimes twisting and turning like acrobats. At times they leap from branch to branch without opening their wings - a move I love to witness, but have yet to catch with my camera.
As with all native Hawaiian birds, the 'I'iwi are threatened with extinction. More than half of all native bird species in Hawai'i have become extinct in the past 100 years. Feral cats, introduced mongoose, and other introduced bird species have caused havoc, but the primary culprit of native bird demise is avian malaria, which is spread by mosquitoes and introduced bird species.
