Description
False-colour image of Triton, the largest of Neptune's satellites, photographed by the Voyager 2 spacecraft on August 23 1989, at a distance of two million km. This colour image was assembled from 3 black & white frames, taken through clear, violet & green filters; the smallest features visible are about 47 km across. Triton's pink colour may be due to red-coloured materials produced by the irradiation of methane ice. Triton's south pole is located towards the bottom of the image and is presently inclined towards the sun. The bright band near the top of the image almost coincides with the equator.
