Mosses are vascular plants, which means they are excellent at moving water (and food) through its system. Moss is permeated, like a sponge, with capillary tubes that absorb and retain water from both the soil and the air. They are usually only one cell thick.
The Chinese traditionally used sphagnum moss on wounds, and it was used during the World Wars in Britain for the same purpose; in fact, a munitions factory in Scotland that make sphagnum moss cakes for field hospital compresses. It was used as a surgical dressing in Germany for 30 years. So, if you ever are in the woods in need of an antiseptic, keep in mind this moss does have proven antiseptic and germicidal properties.
Indigenous North Americans used moss for wound dressings as well; also, for diapers for their babies.
There are 8,000-9,000 species worldwide.

This image was captured in the autumn. It had been raining the few days before. Fresh moss, and wee tiny fungi were discovered growing in harmony together on a tree trunk. I've said many times: I love the lushness, the fresh green, and the velvety soft touch of mosses. Whenever I can, I indulge myself and poke my lens into the tiny world our eyes alone cannot see. ... here's another visit to Moss World.
Captured in natural sunlight ; unedited; uncropped ... nature in all its splendour :)
