JOAN DANCE, FOLK ART
Joan Edmonds Dance, a self-taught folk artist, is a lifetime enthusiast of arts and crafts. In 1984, this enjoyment of the arts took on another phase that incorporated all previous pastimes into one all-consuming form known as Folk Art.
The first recognized Folk Art project was a church. Next, a number of churches were sketched and painted, as seemingly forced upon me by an all-consuming urge to paint church scenes, or die! Since no one else that I knew of was engaged in such activities, I was soon scorned by my peers. One person came to my house and actually voiced this saying, Everybody thinks that you are crazy. A grown woman, your age, always drawing and coloring, you are pitiful! People are laughing at you!
Another friend remarked during a gathering of my peers, Joans art is folksy!
Outside of family members, I had no other close friends; however, my close family unit supported me throughout my many hobbies and that sustained me.
My folk art consists mainly of memory paintings but it also incorporates everyday life scenes garnered from The History Channel on T.V.
