A unique mug by one of our local photographers in Santa Cruz. Love it!

Artist's Description

The Edward B. Greene was constructed for the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Company in 1951 and christened in 1952. She was the first of what was to be known as the AAA Korea class boats. Unlike her sisters, her forward pilothouse had three decks to accommodate corporate passengers. Cleveland Cliffs sold her to Rouge Steel Corporation who renamed her Benson Ford (III). Rouge Steel Corp was a division of the Ford Corporation. In 1989 Ford shut down Rouge Steel operations and sold the ship to Interlake Steamship Company formed Lakes Shipping Company to deliver iron to the Rouge plant. Interlake renamed her Kay E. Barker after the wife of James R. Barker who was affiliated with Interlake. During the 1975-76 layup, 120 feet were added to her bringing her length to 767 feet and a 250 foot self-unloading boom was added during the 1980-81 layup. In early 2012 the Kaye E. Barker’s steam turbine fell silent and was replaced with a new diesel engine. She returned to service in August of th...

I developed an interest in photography at a young age, often following my father around while he took pictures. From that I learned the basics and purchased my first camera while still in high school. I learned more through reading and trial and error. My first formal training came in 2013 when I took a basic photography class at a community college. During high school I became fascinated with the freighters that sailed on the lakes. The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats. In 2011 I combined my two interests, loading my camera in my car and chasing the boats around the lakes. I hope to highlight the hardworking...
