Description
Rock strata revealed in eroded coastal rocks. The diagonal strata seen here are layers that were laid down horizontally then uplifted by geological forces. They have been revealed by erosion of the surrounding rock by the sea. These strata are limestone, formed by the accumulation of the calcareous shells of marine animals, which are then compressed into rock. These limestone strata were laid down in the Jurassic period, which lasted from 200 to 146 million years ago. Photographed at Baleal, Portugal.
