Nahuku better known as Thruston Lava Tube sits hidden deep within the rainforest at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This cave was discovered in 1913 by Lorrin Thurston a local newspaper publisher. At that time of his discovery, the roof was covered with lava stalactites. Souvenir collectors have since removed them and in the process destroyed the original appearance of the cave.

Estimated to be 500 years old, this lava cave is a dramatic remnant of what was once an enormous river of molten lava. Tubes like this are formed when the magma gradually builds solid walls and a ceiling. Then when the lava stops flowing, the last of it passes downhill through the tube leaving a cave. Lava tubes range in size from small to large and some run on for miles. Nahuku is a fantastic example of a massive tube!
