Description
Interior of Mars. Cutaway artwork showing internal layers within Mars. Mars is one of the rocky, terrestrial planets of the inner solar system, and as such is likely to have an interior similar to Earth's. Below the crust (top) is a layer of molten rock (light orange). At the centre of Mars will be a core layer (dark orange). Since Mars has no magnetic field, it is thought the Martian core is solid, unlike Earth's liquid core. The surface of Mars has volcanic features, such as Olympus Mon (top), the largest volcano in the solar system. Mars is not thought to be volcanically active at present, but it was in the past. The radius of Mars (the height of the area shown here) is 3397 kilometres.
