I arrived at Whitefish Point in time to catch the Algoma Montrealis heading off into the setting sun. This turned out to be a fitting image, though I didn't know it at the time.
Launched in 1962, she sailed until 2013. With a length of 730 feet and a beam of 75 feet, she could carry 28,900 metric tons of cargo.
For the 1999-2000 New Year's Eve celebration, she acted as the control ship for the fireworks display in Toronto Harbor when her fleet mates were used as the launch platforms.
At the end of the 2013 shipping season, she was laid up in Montreal to await scrapping. She was the last steam powered freighter sailing under the Canadian flag.
Update: Due to the heavy ice on the lakes over the 2013-14 winter, the shipping season got off to a late start. As a result, the Algoma Montrealis was pressed into service for the 2014 shipping season. It is likely she will be retired at the end of the shipping season.

The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats. In 2011 I combined my two interests, loading my camera in my car and chasing the boats around the lakes. I hope to highlight the hardworking ships and...

Thank you, Ian. It is fitting that I caught the Algoma Montrealis here. I didn't know it at the time, but this would be her final season on the Lakes. She was laid up in Montreal for the winter of 2014 and word is she is currently waiting to be scrapped.
