How often do we spend slow, gentle time of simply being quiet – time that allows us to think, to wonder, to look deep inside ourselves and see what is there?
Probably not very often. Many of us live in societies that pride themselves on being fast-paced, frenetic, filled with energy and movement and busy-ness, although, intriguingly, not necessarily filled with creative action and actual results from all that activity.
Introspection, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into an extremely quiet time and place. A young woman, clad in a towel, lies on her stomach before a gently moving stream.
“She must be in a fairly private place,” we tell ourselves, “to be so scantily clad.”
And indeed it is so. This woman is alone, delightfully so (why are we so very, very afraid of the word, “alone”?) Where she is, specifically, is unclear – the story behind this to be filled in by the viewer. It looks like she could be resting on a rock, in front of a slow moving stream.
Or she could be in a spa setting, before a calm and tranquil pool.
All we see is that she is lying there, relaxed, with one arm reaching down to the water where her fingers gently dabble in. This is a time for true thought and introspection, a time to let the thoughts wander from one area to the next but slowly, easily, as gently as the ripples on the water’s surface.
There is no phone. No TV in the background. No traffic. No slamming of doors and shouting. No demands to be met, no schedule to keep. There is only the still water and the ripples that she makes as she runs her fingers through it, her eyes idly watching the changing patterns.
Is she doing nothing? From our frenetic societal standpoint, yes. But from the standpoint of wisdom, which calls for us to take time away from the hubbub, she is doing incredible things.
