Description
As the drums resound and cymbals clash, the vibrant colour curtain begins to quiver in the traditional lamplight. A strange and frightening loud resounds begin from behind the curtain as towering crown of shimmering gold and jewels emerges above it. At last the owner of the glimmering headress shows his face, covered with a brilliant melange of green, black, red, and white designs. His eyebrows quiver, his eyes roll, and an evil smile curls his painted lips. Long shiny silver fingernails trace elaborate patterns, while the bulky red costume bounces over intricate steps. The singers begin to describe the fantastic deeds of demons and deities. A 7 year old boy dragged himself near to his father and kept looking with anxiety at that gigantic figure. He was attracted on those costumes more than the performance and story which he couldn’t absorb in that age. I used to come early to the venue and be in the green room watching.
Kathakali make-up is an elaborate process lasting for 3 to 4 hours. It helps in giving a super human look to the actors. The make up is directly applied to the face an it does not obstruct the full expression of face and eyes. All the colours used in the make-up are obtained from natural substances and herbs.
Most western scholars consider Kathakali as a dance-drama. It is not a dance drama but a theater form , in which they use dance effectively. Dance is used to express emotions each time. It is one of India’s most remarkable performing arts.

A vibrant effect. The face mask looks Tibetan or Japanese. This lady looks like she's materializing from rainbow flames. Good job, Sethu!
