Thanks Stanza. I wish I painted it, instead I restored it from an old menu cover from the flagship "Lurline" that I acquired on Ebay.

You got it nice too much.

Wow - I didn't realise it was going to be that big! It's a gift for a young member of the family - I think he'll be thrilled as he's a tractor fanatic at 6 years old. A practical gift too. The towel has a smoother upper side so it'll be more comfortable to sit on at the beach. It seems to have a thick absorbent power so no usual skinny beach towel.

Perfect gift for my college niece!!! They love to have their towels for spring break! Highly recommend. I recently bought round beach towels at a major retailer. The quality from fineartamerica far surpasses it! The artwork on the towel is vibrant and attractive. Love it!

Artist's Description

Eugene Francis Savage (1883-1978) was a famous American painter known for his mural paintings and sculptures. In 1940 he completed a two year project for a series of nine 4x8 foot murals for the Matson Shipping line. For this commission, Savage made many exacting studies of customs and folkways of the Hawaiian natives. However, the award-winning murals were not installed as planned but were put in storage during the war years when the ships were used for U.S. troop transportation. In 1948, only six of the nine mural images were reproduced by the shipping company into lithographed menu covers for the company's refurbished flagship "Lurline", "Island Feast" was one of those menu covers. Due to the increased demand, these menus were given away to passengers at the end of the voyage. This was the custom on all steamship lines. This stopped in the 1980s aboard most ships when menus were standardized. Two years later Savage was bestowed the highest possible award of the American Institute...

About James Temple

James Temple

I have lived in Hawaii for the past 16 years, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,500 residents, sort of like living in a small town in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years in the advertising/design/illustration business in Chicago and San Francisco. I have always loved cooking. Eventually that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts. Since then I have designed and built a house, worked in restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing about Hawaii's culinary history on my food...
