In 1899, in the wake of the Spanish American War in which the victorious United Sates occupied the former Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, a large coffee table size two volume book was published filled with photographs of those islands. The narrative was written by war correspondent Jose de Olivares. Photographs and pencil drawings were generally by Walter B. Townsend, although it is cleat that in some instances Jose de Olivares was the photographer as well as writer.

This image is my digitized,restored and enhanced version of Mr. Townsend's illustration engraved on the cover of volume 2 of Our Islands and Their People and may not be reproduced without permission.
