We all will have those moments in life that bring us to our very knees.
This is a one of a kind, original watercolor painting part of a series of works entitled "Vigil of Mercy" that use my connection with surfing and Hawaiian wildlife to document my personal process of mourning and healing through the most painful time of my life.

The Hawaiian 'Iwa bird or Frigate bird is an ancient, intense creature. With a wing span of 7ft and scavenging habits that mainly involve chasing down other seabirds until they are forced to hand over their days catch, the 'Iwa bird is not a gentle creature. They are the pirates of the sky. Often when I surf, I see them descend in enormous flocks of 50+. They soar and circle from water level to dizzying heights.

Recently I have lost everything I truly hold dear in my life in an shocking, devastating manner. I can't explain why, but when I'm surfing and the 'Iwas are soaring, I always feel as if that dark, grieving side of my heart...

Kimberly Kirk is a young emerging artist whose visual creative process is uniquely influenced by her strong background in dance and storytelling. Inspired by her love for nature and spirit, her art is saturated with vivid natural hues and rich with symbolic meanings.She holds a BA in Transformational Arts from the University of Minnesota. Transformational Arts is the study of empowerment through the arts--dance, creative writing, theater, and music. She makes her home on the beautiful island of Kauai with her husband and daughter where she can grow vegetables and surf to her hearts content
