In December 1972 the first and only professional geologist flew on the last Apollo mission to the Moon. At the end of the final EVA, before leaving the lunar surface for the last time, he tossed his geology hammer into the distance where it remains today. This is the 2nd of 3 paintings depicting the hammer throw.
