Jenny Bramley (1909-1997, nee Rosenthal), US physicist. At left (in the background) is nuclear physicist Hans Bethe. Born in Moscow to Lithuanian parents, and studying in Berlin and Paris, she obtained her PhD in physics in 1929 from New York University at the age of 19. She was one of the first women to obtain a PhD in the USA, and went on to careers in scientific research, government, academia, and business, holding several laser-related patents. She married physicist Arthur Bramley in 1943. Bethe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1967 for his work on energy production in stars.
