In Puerto Rico, the Jibaro culture has its origins in the Native Taino culture and the term Jibaro usually refers to the people of the interior montainous regions of Puerto Rico and emerged in the 16th century with the blending of the Pre-Columbian Native Taino and Spanish European cultures in the central mountains of the island of Puerto Rico. This painting honors the Jibaro and the Taino. Jibaro's often wear a straw hat called "Pava". The pava is the traditional hat used by sugar cane cutters, coffee pickers, and other agricultural workers. It is emblematic of the jibaro (a Puerto Rican from the countryside) . The pava is so closely associated with the notion of authentic Puerto Rican culture that when Luis Munoz Marin founded the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) in 1938, the party adopted the pava, as its symbol. Julie Crisan was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in New York, lived in Georgia, USA for 20+ years before moving to Portugal in 2021. As an intuitive artist, she nurtures her soul by allowing herself the creative freedom to create art without limits to style, color or subject matter. She especially enjoys painting abstracts and folk art using different material and styles. Stress played a role in Julie Crisan's discovery of her artistic talents.
