Beautiful print! The only thing I don’t love is the imprint from the wood at the back of the canvas. Maybe different packaging would help?
Artist's Description
John Cable built this grist mill in Cades Cove in the early 1870s. He was a descendent of Peter Cable, a Pennsylvania Dutch farmer who had arrived in the area in the 1820s and designed an elaborate system to drain the swampy lands located in the western part of the cove.
The John Cable Mill was the only one in Cades Cove which used an overshot water wheel. This is a gravity wheel hernessing the force of gravity acting vertically on the water as it travels from the top to the bottom of the wheel. The mill's power was supplied by Mill Creek, but a channel was dug to Forge Creek so the mill could tap both streams if water levels got low.
Cable Mill also used its waterwheel to power saw mills. This revolutionized the way homebuilding in the cove because people switched from building with logs to lumber and frame construction. The Gregg Cable house (Becky Cable House) is an example of a frame built house in Cades Cove.
About Darin Williams
I am an amateur photographer and digital artist currently working fulltime as an Employment Specialist. My real passion is photography and, especially, travel photography. I love to capture ancient architecture, as well as modern and I favor turbulent, partially cloudy skies which seem to add drama to photos of buildings against the backdrop. I have lived in Germany a total of 9 years and still have a great attachment to that country (my adult children still live there). I have lived in Missouri in the USA for most of his life. I am especially fond of traveling in Italy, particularly Rome and northward from there. You will also see many photos of my travels right here in our great United States. I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force (3...
